Introduction

A number of open source efforts exist for tracking and analyzing motion with video. Tracker (https://www.cabrillo.edu/~dbrown/tracker/) is an outstanding piece of software. It is easy to use and full featured. Kinovea is an excellent alternative (http://www.kinovea.org/).

This page documents comparisons between Tracker and a commercial software package (ProAnalyst)to which I have access through a University. However, the very large price tag (many thousands of dollars) and restrictive licensing (one USB key) led me to explore open source alternatives. A student version is $75 per semester, is only available to students working with a professor with a licensed copy of ProAnalyst, and is limited in the number of features tracked. This is criminal. With such limitations the student version should be free. I'll get off my soapbox now...
