This is a study that explores several different tools in the CAELinux package, to determine the length of a channel required to heat a flowing fluid to a specific temperature. We explore the use of Elmer for heat transfer in a solid domain, including adding a non-standard solver; then we use Code_Saturne to study the fluid domain. We have some notes on refining a mesh by creating Groups of Meshes in Salome, which are not well-documented, and offer some discussion on some appropriate turbulence models. We introduce a couple of additional tools not normally included in the CAELinux (g3data for extracting data from a graph, and Eureqa, for fitting a curve to the data to extrapolate information beyond the limits of the original graph). We illustrate the use of "User Law" for variations in density and viscosity in Code_Saturne, then use Paraview to extract average temperatures at various points along the channel.
